Daily News: Link hard to ignore in illicit industries

It’s been called a crime of the shadows. More information continues to be available, but the public often isn’t ready to comprehend or talk openly. Despite this, residents from as near as Fargo are calling it a real issue in their city.

The issue is human trafficking, in particular sex trafficking. Sex trafficking is most often committed through force, fraud and coercion. Its victims include varying ages.

“I often see in the headlines, ‘teenage prostitute,’” Haley Halverson said in a public discussion held Tuesday evening in Wahpeton. “The reality is that there is no such thing as a teenage prostitute. Any individual who is under the age of 18 and is selling sex is a sexual trafficking victim.”
