Getting Wrecked: Miley Cyrus to Direct Porn?

Written by Hysen Sisco, MIM Intern

Miley Cyrus has made headlines once again. GameLink, retailer of adult entertainment, has reached out to Cyrus in a letter to offer her the chance to direct a porn film, with complete creative control, for “ONE MILLION dollars.” (Tacky emphasis theirs.)

Thankfully, they’ve not asked Cyrus to star in a porn film herself. Yet. Her songs, music videos and consequent performances focus heavily on pornographic gestures, poses and lyrics; that may be the next step. As someone who is trying desperately to shed any semblance of childhood, Cyrus may choose the wrong title of “adult” to prove she’s grown up. She has not responded publicly to this invitation, and let’s hope she never does.

In the letter, GameLink flatters Cyrus by telling her she is “an empowered young woman that is unapologetic about [her] lifestyle, especially when it comes to expressing [her] sexuality.” They go on to say:

We believe that as an empowered 21st century woman, you are the ideal choice to show the world your vision as an artist in the world of adult entertainment.

We at GameLink feel this gives you a chance to finally show the world you are not a little girl anymore, and you won’t bow to the pressures of the likes of Sinead O’Connor, who is jealous of your success.

Please consider GameLink’s unique offer if you really want to shake things up and create a buzz while feeding your creativity.

Now, I don’t know about you, but as a woman, I don’t see a woman who glories in the degradation and abuse of other women “empowered.” I see her as part of the machine; an ensign for the misogynistic porn industry to hold up and say “Look! We have a girl on our side!” That woman simply becomes their puppet, not someone who makes healthy choices that reflect the respect and dignity both sexes deserve.

As for Sinead O’Connor, the Irish singer-songwriter wrote an open letter to Cyrus warning her of the dangers of allowing herself to be prostituted by the music industry. She wrote, “Nothing but harm will come in the long run, from allowing yourself to be exploited, and it is absolutely NOT in ANY way an empowerment of yourself or any other young women, for you to send across the message that you are to be valued (even by you) more for your sexual appeal than your obvious talent.”

Honestly, this doesn’t sound like a bitter artist. This is more like of a loving plea to show respect for herself, even while others may not. As the old saying goes, we teach others how to treat us. If Cyrus thinks her worth is only in her body and how shocking she acts, others will follow suit.
