We have good news to report regarding our efforts to get retailers to wrap the cover of the nearly pornographic Sports Illustrated 2015 Swimsuit Edition and move it from public display, especially checkout lines.
Walgreens, Barnes & Noble, and Safeway all originally responded by defending the magazines and refusing to move them from high traffic areas. But, nearly 31,000 emails have been sent to top retailers and now Safeway is changing course. Safeway announced that they are placing them away from checkout stands and that two-thirds of cover will be out of sight.
See Safeway’s are messages below.

SAFEWAY’S MESSAGE AFTER RECIEVING MORE THAN 30,000 EMAIL COMPLAINTS FROM NCSE SUPPORTERS
Dear Ms. Davis:
Thank you for your message. The company that supplies magazines and manages the displays was instructed to place the issue away from the check stand area. We have followed up with that company to ensure appropriate placement of the issue in the periodical area and in its own shipping display, which covers the bottom two thirds of the magazine.
Thank you for contacting Safeway!

SAFEWAY’S RESPONSE JUST AFTER THE RELEASE OF CONTROVERSIAL SI ISSUE
Dear Mr. & Mrs. Gould:
Thank you for writing to us about the Sports Illustrated magazines sold at Safeway stores.
We appreciate the time and effort you have taken to express your concerns about this publication. While we respect all of our customers’ points of view, we would rather not be in a position of trying to determine or dictate what constitutes the mainstream of contemporary readers’ tastes.
Your comments will be directed to our Public Affairs Department for further review on the matter.
