The Problem

Pornography is everywhere. With the rise of the Internet, hardcore graphic content is accessible at the click of a button. It has found its way into homes, communities, and even churches. It leaves a trail of devastation in its wake and leads to multiple other forms of sexual exploitation. There is almost certainly someone in your congregation who has struggled with pornography.

Thankfully, there is hope. Here you will find a collection of resources available for you to combat pornography in your church. You can also insert your email under “Take Action” to receive a free copy of our resource handout “HELP YOUR CHURCH: Five Ways To Start Talking About Pornography In Your Church”. Together we can create a world free from sexual exploitation.

Pornography is Pervasive:

  • It’s Everywhere: Young children are now exposed to hardcore (mainstream) pornography at an alarming rate, with 27% of older millennials (age 25-30) reporting that they first viewed pornography before puberty.[i] Sixty-four percent of people 13–24 actively seek out pornography weekly or more often.[ii]
  • It’s Getting Worse: 93% of pastors and 94% of youth pastors say pornography is a much bigger or somewhat bigger problem than it was in the past.[iii]
  • It’s Deeply Affecting Young People: 62% of teens and young adults have received a sexually explicit image and 41% have sent one (usually from/to their boy/girlfriend or friend).[iv]
  • It’s In Your Church: More than half of youth pastors have had at least one teen come to them for help in dealing with porn in the past 12 months[v]

Links to Sexual Violence:

  • The Research Is In: A 2015 meta-analysis of 22 studies from seven countries found that internationally the consumption of pornography was significantly associated with increases in verbal and physical aggression, among males and females alike.[vi]
  • Pornography Teaches that Women Enjoy Sexual Violence: Analysis of the 50 most popular pornographic videos (those bought and rented most often) found that 88% of scenes contained physical violence, and 49% contained verbal aggression.[vii] Eighty-seven percent of aggressive acts were perpetrated against women, and 95% of their responses were either neutral or expressions of pleasure.[viii]
  • Pornography Is Linked to Increased Female Sexual Victimization: A study of 14- to 19-year-olds found that females who watched pornographic videos were at significantly greater likelihood of being victims of sexual harassment or sexual assault[ix]

Impact on Relationships:

  • Dissatisfaction with Partners: Research has demonstrated that the more pornography a man watches, the more likely he is to deliberately conjure images of pornography during sex to maintain arousal, and to experienced decreased enjoyment intimate behaviors with a partner.[x]
  • Extramarital Affairs: A study found that persons ever having an extramarital affair were more than 3 times more apt to have used Internet pornography than ones who had lacked affairs. Other research affirms that pornography consumption is associated with more positive attitudes towards extramarital affairs.[xi]

Impact on Morality:

  • Porn Not Seen as Immoral: Teens & young adults view “not recycling” as more immoral than viewing porn.[xii]
  • Young People Not Seeing Harms of Porn: Most Americans believe porn is “bad for society,” but those attitudes are shifting toward neutrality or “good for society” among younger generations.[xiii]
  • Porn is Becoming More Accepted: Only one in 20 young adults and one in 10 teens say their friends think viewing pornography is a bad thing.[xiv]
