Bishop Paul S. Loverde
Bishop Paul S. Loverde was appointed by Pope Saint John Paul II as the Third Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Arlington on January 25, 1999. Prior to coming to the Diocese of Arlington, Bishop Loverde served as the Bishop of Ogdensburg, New York for five years.
Bishop Loverde was born in Framingham, Massachusetts, and grew up in Pawcatuck, Connecticut. He studied for the priesthood at Saint Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield, Connecticut. He then studied philosophy at Saint Bernard’s Seminary in Rochester, New York and completed his theological studies at The Gregorian University in Rome. He received a Licentiate Degree in Theology from Gregorian University and later a Licentiate Degree in Canon Law from The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC.
He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Norwich, Connecticut on December 18, 1965, in Saint Peter’s Basilica in Rome. He was ordained Auxiliary Bishop of Hartford on April 12, 1988, in the Cathedral of Saint Joseph in Hartford. He was installed as the Eleventh Bishop of Ogdensburg on January 17, 1994, and he was installed as the Third Bishop of Arlington on March 25, 1999.
The bishop has served the Church in many capacities, including: associate pastor, campus minister and college chaplain, parish administrator, clergy personnel director, associate presiding judge on the Diocesan Tribunal, and Chairman of the Council of Priests. Moreover, he served as a member of the Vocations Committee of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops from November 1992 to November 1995, and then Chairman from November 1995 to November 1999 and he served as a member of the Education Committee of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops from November 1999 to November 2002. From November 2004-2008, and November 2011-2014, he served as a member of the Administrative Committee for the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops as well as a member of the Priorities and Plans Committee, 2011-2014.
Since coming to the Diocese of Arlington, Bishop Loverde has authored five Pastoral Letters: Growing in Wisdom, Age and Grace on January 30, 2006, To Remember Well on September 11, 2006, Bought with a Price on November 30, 2006, Fountain of Life, Fire of Love, October 13, 2011, Go Forth with Hearts on Fire, November 24, 2013, and re-issued Bought with a Price, March 19, 2014.
Currently, he serves on the Board of Trustees of Catholic Distance University (CDU), Mount Saint Mary’s University, The Divine Mercy University, the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, the Commissariat of the Holy Land, the Religious Alliance Against Pornography, and the National Center on Sexual Exploitation.
Bishop Loverde was awarded the NCEA Seton Award in October 2015, as well as the Good Shepherd Award given by the Pontifical College Josephinum in October 2015. He received the John Carroll Medal from the John Carroll Society in April 2016.
The bishop has received honorary doctorates from: Marymount University (2000); Wadhams Hall Seminary College (2001); Institute for the Psychological Sciences (now The Divine Mercy University), (2012); Mount St. Mary’s University (2014); and Christendom College (2015).
