Washington, DC – “ Fifty Shades of Grey’s” $81.7 million dollar domestic box office record is the result of the media firestorm and a slick, deceptive marketing campaign by Universal Pictures, which peaked the American public’s curiosity to see the film. The film is not the love story it was advertised to be. Rather, as the millions who flocked to the film learned, “Fifty Shades” is nothing more than a porn film filled with hardcore sex and misogyny targeted to women by including a romantic narrative and fancy soundtrack.
Washington, DC –Thursday night, February 13, 2015, “Fifty Shades of Grey” was released in theaters. Dawn Hawkins, executive director of National Center on Sexual Exploitation (NCSE), which is the leading organization dedicated to opposing pornography by highlighting the links to sex trafficking, violence against women, and abuse, reluctantly fulfilled her obligation to see the film with the purpose of educating others on its content.
WASHINGTON – The D.C.-based National Center on Sexual Exploitation is calling for a boycott of the new movie “Fifty Shades of Grey,” saying it glamorizes sexual violence. The mass media and throngs of women are swooning over the twisted “love story” “Fifty Shades of Grey,” but this cultural phenomenon’s impact on society will serve only to glamorize sexual violence and romanticize domestic abuse.
Washington, DC – While many will choose to watch Fifty Shades of Grey, the movie will not live up to expectations at the box office. This film is not a love story, as it has been described. Love does not exist in a story glamorizing sexual violence and domestic abuse. Thanks to the media firestorm falsely portraying the film as a romantic fairy tale, there will surely be packed theaters at the film’s opening. However, sales will quickly drop as people see that once the glitz, glamour, and soundtrack are removed, Fifty Shades is really just a disappointing story that tells the public to embrace violence against women.
