WASHINGTON, DC (MAY 19, 2025) – The National Center on Sexual Exploitation (NCOSE) commended President Trump for signing the TAKE IT DOWN Act into law today.
“Signing the TAKE IT DOWN Act into law is an historic moment for survivors of image-based sexual abuse: There’s finally a path for this abuse to be quickly removed from digital platforms. With bipartisan support in Congress and First Lady Melania Trump’s championship, landmark legislation passed unusually fast,” observed Dr. Marcel van der Watt, President, National Center on Sexual Exploitation.
“Image-based sexual abuse is a horrific assault on a person, and that abuse becomes magnified on digital platforms. No one should have to endure sexual abuse through the creation of deepfake pornography or non-consensually-shared sexually explicit imagery. The TAKE IT DOWN Act will combat this abhorrent abuse, and we commend President Trump for signing this into law.”
The TAKE IT DOWN Act criminalizes the act of uploading image-based sexual abuse (IBSA) and mandates that platforms remove this material within 48 hours. Image-based sexual abuse (IBSA) is a broad term that includes a wide range of harmful experiences involving the weaponization of sexually explicit or sexualized images or videos.
In a new report, the National Center on Sexual Exploitation revealed that mainstream pornography tube sites like Pornhub, XVideos, XNXX, and xHamster have fueled the global crisis of image-based sexual abuse (IBSA).
