Washington, DC – Today the Senate Commerce Committee voted unanimously in support of the Stop Enabling Sex Traffickers Act (S. 1693). This legislation would amend Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act (CDA) to protect victims of online sex trafficking and empower state law enforcement officials. The National Center on Sexual Exploitation applauds the action of the Commerce Committee and calls on the full Senate to move swiftly to pass the bill.
“With today’s unanimous vote of the Senate Commerce Committee, Congress is one step closer to passing the most important anti-trafficking legislation in nearly twenty years, said Lisa L. Thompson, Vice President of Research and Education at the National Center on Sexual Exploitation. “There is no change to federal law more urgent and necessary to fighting sex trafficking than a strong, but narrowly crafted, amendment to the Communications Decency Act.”
“We join with victims, judges, U.S. Attorneys General from 48 states, anti-trafficking advocates, and Oracle in calling on the U.S. Congress to act without delay to pass meaningful reform to the CDA,” Thompson added.
