Washington, DC (February 13, 2020) – The National Center on Sexual Exploitation is pleased to announce that Dr. Michael Shively, a foremost national expert on combating demand for sexual exploitation, has joined the organization. Dr. Shively will serve as Senior Advisor on Research and Data Analysis.
“To invigorate efforts to combat demand for sexual exploitation, the National Center on Sexual Exploitation (NCOSE) announces the hiring of the nation’s foremost expert in demand reduction, Dr. Michael Shively,” said Dawn Hawkins, Senior Vice President of the National Center on Sexual Exploitation. “With more than thirty years of experience conducting applied research on criminal justice and public health issues, and substantive expertise on sex trafficking, commercial sexual exploitation, sex offenses, and intimate partner violence, we are thrilled to be joined by Dr. Shively. His encyclopedic knowledge will be utilized for law enforcement efforts and research initiatives aimed at eliminating demand for sexual exploitation.”
“The men who buy sex provide the revenue stream—and thus the economic motivation—for all sex trafficking and prostitution. Their choice to buy people for sex is the root of sex trafficking,” Hawkins continued. “We believe the expertise that Dr. Shively brings to this subject will set in motion a new and powerful wave of initiatives to end demand.”
Dr. Shively concluded, “When the role of demand in fueling these terrible crimes is ignored, the root of the epidemic is left to deepen and expand, and the cycle of sexual exploitation continues. From my decades of study, I know we must focus our attention and resources on those most responsible for creating harm – the sex buyers. NCOSE and I will be working to create and share the know how to do just that.”
