Statement on by Dawn Hawkins, Executive Director of NCOSE
Washington, DC – Playboy’s first non-nude magazine will be released this week. The National Center on Sexual Exploitation (NCOSE) observes that this change will enable Playboy to continue to promote sexual exploitation and objectification on an even broader scale.
“Playboy is trying to remain relevant and make money in a world where mere nudity is no longer interesting or even profitable,” said Dawn Hawkins, Executive Director of the National Center on Sexual Exploitation. “By removing full nudity, and playing off of Instagram and Snapchat esthetics, Playboy is now able to accept advertising and gain wider placement in newsstands around the country. Similar to Cosmopolitan magazine, Playboy will continue to produce material that promotes pornography and the objectification of women. Playboy paved the way for the commodification of the female body in soft-core pornographic magazines, and it laid the groundwork for the public health crisis of Internet pornography that America is experiencing today. We encourage newsstands and business owners to reject the new Playboy, and to send the message that women are equals to be respected, and not mere body parts to be objectified for profit.”
