T.I., Tiny, and the Role of Power and Influence in Sexual Abuse and Exploitation

By:

On January 26, 2021, an Atlanta-based entrepreneur, Sabrina Peterson, leveled serious allegations against rapper Clifford (T.I.) Harris when she posted shocking claims that follow a violent dispute between the two. In a string of explosive Instagram posts, Peterson claimed that Harris physically assaulted her at his home in Atlanta, GA.

“…@troubleman31 you PUT A GUN TO MY HEAD IN FRONT OF CHILDREN & I NEVER CALLED THE POLICE ON YOU! But for years you have painted me as the VILLAIN.”

“AS BLACK WOMEN! It’s hard to heal from RAPE, VIOLENCE OR ANYTHING BECAUSE YOU ARE PAINTED AS THE PROBLEM OR REASON THIS HAS HAPPENED TO YOU. LET’S NORMALIZE THE ALLOWING BLACK WOMEN TO HEAL!”

Since coming forward, Peterson has been met with support from social media users across multiple platforms including Twitter and YouTube.

Peterson’s vulnerability also led to her receiving over two dozen messages from women who all had their own stories that added additional detail about the intimidation, abuse, and rape they alleged experiencing at the hands of T.I. and Tiny Harris. Many of the stories, which Peterson shared via her Instagram account, noted that the couple pressured them into drug use as a means for facilitating the sexual assaults that were perpetrated by the couple and others.

Soon after Peterson went public with the allegations, a celebrity lawyer, Lisa Bloom, announced she would be representing some of the alleged victims that had come forward with claims. “Good Lord. So many accusers,” Bloom tweeted on January 30. She added that her firm “now [sic] represent one of them,” before concluding with “More to come.”

Lisa Bloom, who is known for her involvement in high profile harassment, abuse, and discrimination cases, has experience with cases pertaining to sexual misconduct as she and her firm are also representing 10 male survivors who are accusing fashion designer Alexander Wang of sexual abuse and harassment.

So far, all allegations involving the couple have been made anonymously and uploaded to Peterson’s Instagram story. Via Bloom’s Twitter account, it was announced that her firm is currently seeking information that others may have about the case involving T.I. and Tiny Harris.

“I believe the women who are coming forward now will be part of that change, and we intend to fight for them,” Bloom said in an interview.

As the list of perpetrators who have abused their wealth and power as a means for pursuing their sexual demand via tactics that include intimidation, assault, and rape grows, aided and abetted by a culture of avoidance and open secrets over the years, it has become abundantly clear that the entertainment industry’s slavish devotion to fame and fortune has long bullied and silenced victims. When it comes to the work that is necessary to expose abusers and see them brought to justice, many efforts are thwarted by friends, managers, and other associates in a star’s circle of influence in order to help them remain in their influential positions.

We have seen examples of this in the careers of Harvey Weinstein, Bill Cosby, Kevin Spacey, Armie Hammer, R Kelly, and many more. Worse yet, even as more allegations come to light, the industry continues to turn a blind eye to the behaviors of the elite while leaving victims to face the larger repercussions of their abusers’ actions.

As media attention pertaining to the alleged victims in the case against T.I. and Tiny Harris has waned, social media users have turned their attention to calling out this silence from the media industry. As the story continues to develop even as the spotlight fades, many are reminded just how quickly Hollywood tries to sweep allegations of this nature under the rug.

While all current claims are officially allegations—which T.I. and Tiny Harris have denied to date—and criminal charges have yet to be filed, it is important that these stories not be taken lightly.

The impacts of sexual assault, domestic abuse, and physical and sexual violence are life-altering to survivors. Unfortunately, survivors of sexual abuse and exploitation are too often isolated and silenced when it comes to telling their stories. While there are those who prefer a quieter approach in the pursuit of justice, the process often denies and/or dismisses the voices of survivors who are willing and able to speak out. In light of that reality, it is important to understand how individuals with larger social media presences, like Sabrina Peterson, have played a role in helping survivors share their stories in their own voice and under their own terms.

As countless stories exposing patterns of sexual exploitation perpetrated under the guise of celebrity culture are becoming more visible, it is important to acknowledge that the abuse of status and power for sexual demand is not a far-off threat—it happens within our own communities.

The use of force, fraud, and coercion through “job opportunities,” adults grooming children, the use of financial leverage and substance abuse as a means to control, rape, and traffic people are real world examples of ways that perpetrators with seemingly “normal” levels of power can and do exert their sexual demands on victims in day-to-day life in communities across the United States and around the world. The scars left on survivors of these experiences often involve a lifetime of guilt, shame, and isolation as they grapple with the many barriers of misperception that are pervasive in our culture.

Understanding sexual abuse and common sex abuse behaviors can be useful in creating safe space for victims to recollect and share their stories while also publicly denouncing the actions of offenders. Where these abuses often go overlooked by mainstream society, victims’ rights law firms can help protect and defend the human dignity of those who often feel marginalized and powerless.

Sex-based assault and discrimination transcends the boundaries of gender, age, class, race, sexual orientation, etc. The silencing of survivors isn’t limited to Hollywood or the rich and famous. This is an issue that impacts each and every one of us. We must all work diligently to come together to promote holistic solutions to prevent sexual violence before it happens by helping others understand how root problems, such as demand, impact the prevalence of sexual abuse, rape, sex trafficking, and more.
