WASHINGTON, DC (June 1, 2022) – The National Center on Sexual Exploitation (NCOSE) urges Netflix shareholders to hold the company to account for producing and distributing sexually explicit and exploitative content ahead of Netflix’s annual shareholders meeting on June 2. Netflix is on the 2022 Dirty Dozen List of mainstream contributors to sexual exploitation.
“Netflix hosts and promotes programming that glamorizes sexual abuse, normalizes incest and the sexualization of children, and whitewashes the violence and exploitation in prostitution. Netflix must take responsibility for this harmful content and its shareholders must hold the company to account,” said Lina Nealon, director of corporate and strategic initiatives for the National Center on Sexual Exploitation.
“Netflix must stop hosting and producing content which normalizes and fuels sexual violence, abuse, and exploitation. It should remove films that glamorize sex trafficking and abuse like 365 Days and 365 Days: This Day; content that sexualizes children such as Big Mouth, Cuties, and Baby; shows that normalize prostitution or disrespect victims and survivors such as Crime Scene: The Times Square Killer and Madame Claude.
“Netflix regularly ignores calls by advocates to remove harmful content, demonstrating its lack of corporate social responsibility and its callous willingness to profit from this horrific content. The time is now for Netflix to demonstrate responsibility to its shareholders and subscribers,” Nealon said.
