2024 Mid-Year Report: Grilling Zuckerberg, Taking Down Pornhub, and More

By:

We’re only halfway through the year, but we have already accomplished so much together!

We’ve just released our 2024 Mid-Year Gratitude Report—a summary of progress and victories since the beginning of the year.

To everyone who has signed advocacy actions, donated, helped spread the word on social media, or otherwise joined us in this mission—YOU made these victories happen!

Below are just a few examples of victories and progress explored in the Mid-Year Gratitude Report.

Big Tech CEOs Grilled by Congress

In January, the Senate Judiciary Committee summoned the CEOs of Meta (formerly Facebook), X (formerly Twitter), TikTok, Snap, and Discord, and grilled them about the rampant child sexual exploitation facilitated by their platforms.

NCOSE assisted the Senate Judiciary Committee in preparing for this hearing, hosted an online issue briefing the day before, and rallied people to take action, demanding that Congress pass legislation to hold these tech companies accountable.

Taking Down Pornhub and XVideos in Court

Our lawsuits representing survivors against Pornhub and XVideos, the two biggest pornography companies in the world, have both taken big steps forward this year!

The Pornhub lawsuit received class certification, meaning any survivor of child sexual abuse material distributed on Pornhub have a right to receive compensation if the lawsuit is won. Further, Pornhub is now required to put a notice of the class-action lawsuit on their website.

Kids Online Safety Act Poised to Pass This Session

The Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA), is poised to become the first online child protection legislation passed by Congress in 25 years. The bill, which holds tech companies accountable to designing their products responsibly to keep children safe, now boasts a whopping 69 Senate co-sponsors from across the political spectrum.

KOSA was introduced in the House of Representatives in April 2024, with 11 co-sponsors in just one month. Both Republicans and Democrats are standing united on this crucial solution to protect kids!

Suing the State of Nevada for Enabling Sex Trafficking

This year we filed a second lawsuit against the State of Nevada, seeking to hold the government accountable for enabling sex trafficking with its policy of legalized prostitution, arguing that they are breaking the 13th Amendment prohibiting slavery. We are also petitioning the Supreme Court to review an unjust decision in our earlier lawsuit against the State of Nevada.

Meta Blurs Nudity in Direct Messages for Minors

For years, we have been pressing on Meta to automatically blur nudity in direct messages (DMs) for minors, across all their platforms. In January, they finally agreed to do so in Instagram and Facebook DMs, but only for teens 13-15 years old. This wasn’t good enough for us.

You joined us in keeping the pressure on them, until finally they agreed to blur nudity for all minors on Instagram DMs, just weeks after being placed on the 2024 Dirty Dozen List. This change protects approximately 160 million teens ages 13-17 who use Instagram worldwide!
