After former Vice President Dick Cheney gave a far-reaching interview for Playboy magazine, an anti-pornography group has spoken out, noting what it describes as the publication’s “exploitation” of women, The Washington Post reported.
The Washington, D.C.-based National Center on Sexual Exploitation tweeted this message, ending with the hashtag #endexploitation.
The nonprofit organization questioned Cheney’s choice of giving an extensive, 10-hour-long interview with journalist James Rosen for the famed magazine, which has featured nude spreads of women since it first rolled off the presses, helmed by Hugh Hefner, in 1953, the Post said.
Could Cheney, wondered the group’s executive director Dawn Hawkins in a statement, be contributing to “the hyper-sexualized, pornified state of our nation?”
“What woman would find his interview in a magazine that profits from the sexual exploitation of women?” Hawkins inquired. “Cheney’s action says to women, ‘I’m not talking to you and you’re no more than an object to be gawked at’.”
Cheney, who expresses in his interview his deep dislike of President Barack Obama’s polices, joins a host of well-known politicos who have sat down to talk to the magazine, which features plenty of story content alongside its famed photographs, the Post pointed out.
Added Cheney bluntly: “To say that we criticize, or that I criticize, Barack Obama or Eric Holder because of race, I just think it’s obviously not true. My view of it is the criticism is merited because of performance — or lack of performance, because of incompetence. It hasn’t got anything to do with race.”
